Connecting the decisions that shape a business
Why strategy, customer experience, Marketing, Sales, Service, technology and investment need to be considered as one connected system.
Organisations rarely make important decisions in isolation.
A decision to enter a new market can change the customers an organisation needs to serve, the offerings it takes to market, how Marketing and Sales need to operate, the customer experience it must create, the technology capabilities it requires and ultimately the investment needed to make the strategy viable.
The same is true of a new business. Decisions about the market, brand, offerings, audiences, revenue model, customer experience and technology begin shaping the organisation long before implementation starts.
Yet these decisions are often made separately.
Market research may sit in one document. Strategy in another. Customer research somewhere else. Financial assumptions live in spreadsheets. Marketing, Sales and Service develop their own plans. Technology teams assess systems and architecture. Transformation programmes eventually attempt to bring everything together.
Each piece may be well considered. The difficulty is understanding whether the pieces still make sense together.
Connecting organisational intelligence
MarTech Canvas approaches this problem through 13 connected modules: Model, Market, Brand, Offerings, Audience, Revenue, Strategy, Engage, Technology, Roadmap, Value, Transformation and Learn.
Each develops a different part of the organisation's intelligence and intended future state.
The important distinction is that they don't operate as independent tools.
An assumption developed while understanding the Market can influence Brand, Offerings and Audience. Those decisions can affect Revenue and Strategy. Strategy informs how Marketing, Sales and Service should work together through Engage. Those requirements help determine the capabilities and Technology needed, which influence Roadmap, Value and Transformation.
Learn closes the loop by allowing what happens subsequently to strengthen the intelligence used in future planning and decisions.
The objective isn't simply to produce thirteen separate answers. It is to understand whether the answers remain coherent when considered together.
Exploring implications before committing
Connected intelligence also creates the foundation for simulation.
Instead of treating a strategic choice as an isolated decision, different assumptions and alternatives can be explored across the areas of the organisation they may affect.
- What happens if the target market changes?
- What if revenue assumptions don't hold?
- Does the intended customer experience require capabilities the organisation doesn't currently possess?
- Does a proposed technology investment actually support the strategy?
- What needs to change before the intended future state can realistically be implemented?
Simulation doesn't eliminate uncertainty or predict the future with certainty. It provides a structured way of examining potential implications before significant resources are committed.
Intelligence coordinated around the decision
AI supports this process throughout MarTech Canvas.
Specialist intelligence can be developed within individual areas while Executive Intelligence helps connect those perspectives across the organisation.
The purpose is not to transfer decision authority to AI.
MarTech Canvas advises. People decide.
The people responsible for the decision remain responsible for judgement. The role of MarTech Canvas is to help them see more of the relevant picture, challenge assumptions, understand relationships and explore potential implications.
From strategy to transformation — and learning
This is also why MarTech Canvas doesn't stop at the investment decision.
The intelligence behind a decision can continue into Strategy, Engage, Technology, Roadmap and Value, before being translated through Transformation into detailed requirements that prepare the organisation for implementation and change.
Learn ultimately provides the opportunity to compare expectations and assumptions with what actually occurred.
The result is a continuous intelligence cycle rather than a collection of disconnected planning exercises.
Clarity before you invest
MarTech Canvas exists to help organisations make better consequential decisions by connecting the intelligence that matters and exploring the implications of different choices before significant resources are committed.
Not by claiming certainty.
By creating greater clarity about the decision being made.
